Jen & Paper

Developmental Editing, Line Editing, Copy Editing, Book Coaching, and Beta Reading Services

My name is Jen

I have dedicated a large portion of my life to caring for others, but reading and writing have always been my lifelong passions. After achieving a career in the medical field as a neonatal registered nurse, I found myself looking for ways to take better care of myself and my mental health. Unsurprisingly, this journey led me to settling in with a good book. I rediscovered the healing benefits of reading for leisure and I decided to redirect my career to care for a different type of “baby.” Now I edit manuscripts with the same intensity that I give to my neonatal patients.

To perfect my craft, I attended Southern New Hampshire University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a focus in creative writing. While earning this degree, I experienced the unique vulnerability that comes from submitting work for criticism and feedback.

Because I want your “baby” to receive the highest level of skilled care, I completed the Editing and Publication Certificate Program at the University of California, Los Angeles – Extension. I keep my practice up to date by attending seminars through my membership in the Editorial Freelancers Association and ACES: The Society for Editing.

Whether you’re a first-time author or you have twenty years of experience, I want to help you prepare your manuscript for publication. I look forward to working with you!

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing, also known as substantive or content editing, is the first stage of editing a manuscript.  This stage focuses on the structure of the story, progression of ideas, and  genre elements, such as dialogue and character development.

Line Editing

Line editing, or stylistic editing, deals with the syntax and conciseness of the work. This stage of editing identifies areas that could be reworked to improve the reader's clarity and understanding of the manuscript. This service is often paired with copy editing.

Copy Editing

Copyediting is the meticulous process of ensuring that a manuscript is technically correct and consistent. Edits in this stage are typically done in alignment with a specific style guide and format preferences, such as The Chicago Manual of Style.

Jennifer is a thorough and highly compassionate editor. She takes the time to read the work, understand the author's voice, and ensure any changes she recommends elevate the story. Her technical skills are top-notch, but she also conveys her notes in a way that's easy to understand and apply. Jennifer is a fantastic editor and I will work with her again!
